Let me be clear: I’m not saying you can never use third-party parts. I know budgets are real. But I learned the hard way that there’s a difference between a compatible part and a reliable part.

When I compared the failed motor side by side with the OEM Tennant unit later, I noticed three things the cheaper supplier didn’t mention:

  • The seal around the shaft was a different material. The OEM part used a rubber compound rated for continuous use in wet environments. The knockoff used a cheaper plastic that, according to the data sheet I finally tracked down, was only rated for intermittent contact with water. In a floor scrubber that’s frequently washing the floor? Yeah, that fails fast.
  • The windings were slightly thinner wire. The knockoff motor was rated at 1.2 amps continuous; the OEM was rated at 1.5 amps with a safety margin. Running even a standard T300 with scrubber pads that have seen some wear—say, 13″ floor scrubber pads that are starting to load up—can push current draw past the cheap motor’s limits.

When something breaks, I don’t start searching. I open that document, make one call, and confirm the order. The 10 minutes I spent building that list saved me days of scrambling.

And for the love of everything, if you’re buying 13″ floor scrubber pads, check the pad type. Not all pads are the same. I once ordered a case of aggressive stripping pads when we needed daily cleaning pads. The floor came out looking like we’d taken sandpaper to it.
