The Cheapest Floor Scrubber Is Often the Most Expensive: Lessons From a Facility Manager

In March 2024, I got a call that still makes me want to throw a wrench.

It was 3:40 p.m. A production line at my facility was scheduled to restart at 6:00 a.m., and the ride-on scrubber we had bought eight weeks earlier—because it undercut every other quote—was flashing an error code. Problem two: wrong machine for the environment

Cheap machines don't usually fail on the first day. They fail on day 40, after a brush wears unevenly, a belt slips, or an overloaded motor cooks itself. By then, the damage has spread to other parts.
